Sir Reginold Cosgrove – Go! Go!! Go!!!

There’s something to be said for stream of consciousness writing, music or otherwise. In fact, there’s a fine line between the superbly creative and those without a direction or identity. On Go! Go!! Go!!!, Sir Reginold Cosgrove & His Nighttime Singers tread the line with indie rock grace and cutting edge simplicity. This is an EP worth having.

Virtually no stone is left unturned in this 5-song rampage through all things rock and pop. Sometimes a bull in a china shop is a good thing. The opening title track gives the vibe of intentionally under produced surf rock. While entertaining enough, one wonders where the CD is going. As it turns out, the whole thing sounds gloriously homemade. The styling is all over the place, which is the beauty of this disc. The second track, “Sir Laurence Oliver” answers the first song’s question and then some with perhaps the best song that Big Star never wrote. It could be a hit in any era with its melodic structure and simplistic nature. The follow-up is the mediocre and frantic “Hey, Hey, Hey.” (Apparently, exclamatory words voiced in triplicate are a favorite motif with this group). But just as one thinks that this band’s effort–with multiple, talented coed singers, no less–is wandering aimlessly, “Chocolate Sunday Afternoon” proves everybody wrong in all of its simplistic, classic pop glory. Wrapping things up is “More Than This,” a half-step, sludge rock ditty that reminds one that he or she has not, in fact, figured this band out. For better or worse, there’s effort.

Are there better pop songs? Sure. Are there better rock songs? Yep. Are there better musicians? Uh-huh. But one would be hard-pressed to find it in one all-encompassing package like Go! Go!! Go!!! At least on the local, “you-can-still-see-them-for $5″ level. If after a few minutes worth of listening, you don’t find something you like, keep listening. Something’s bound to grab you.
