The Murmen – Smoking Weed in Public
With 21 tracks, this mix-tape has something for everyone. Heavy East Coast breaks with cleverly syncopated rhymes, funky dance beats with catchy choruses, and story raps over smooth West Coast grooves make this album a great listen. ‘The MURmen’ are compiled of: LG Kush, (frontman of ‘Hustle City’), The Hashtronaut, Sly Ry, Alpalphabet, and Jender. Sometimes certain verses are louder than others and some volume control during the mastering may have been overlooked, but pound for pound, the album is technically solid.
The beats are impeccable due to the fact that they are lifted from some of hip-hop’s greatest producers like Dr. Dre, DJ Premiere, Pete Rock, and The RZA. Despite this, they still come original, like on “Rock the Hashbong,” a direct sample from “Rock the Casbah.” Although sampling is the essence of hip-hop, their completely original new album, Coming From The Depths, should be refreshing. Maybe LG Kush could convince ‘Hustle City’ to record some original tracks for it.
“Home (of the dome)” is the best song as an ode to Bellingham, it contains lines like: People stop here between Seattle and Vancouver/And leave without ever knowing Bellingham’s cooler/Throne of the northwest, we rest easy/Flowing like the kites at Boulevard when it’s breezy/2AM I’m where the fries are cheesy. Opening for ‘R.A. The Rugged Man’ and cutting this album in the small amount of time they’ve been together are truly accomplishments.
