15 Years: A whole lotta tourin’ going on

When What’s Up! began 15 years ago, local bands didn’t tour – at least not to the extent they do now. The Mono Men toured and maybe a handful of other bands circa 1993, but in 1998, it just wasn’t happening.

The first band we wrote about touring was Federation X, who went on a tour in August of 1998. Their tour still goes down as one of the most ridiculous I’ve ever seen and we’ve written about – they played nine shows over a few weeks with the shows scattered all over the U.S., included Harrisburg, West Virginia where Beau and Bill hung out while Ben took his then girlfriend to New York. They came back exhausted, but a better and stronger band having gone through the massive road trip. Their trip was featured in the October 1998 issue.

The next band who put touring on their radar was Death Cab for Cutie, their March of 1999 tour had them driving straight from Bellingham to Austin where they played two shows at SxSW, then a handful of dates on the way back – the whole tour lasted approximately two weeks.

This Tales from the Road feature hasn’t always been any easy page to fill; it took two years before we consistently received submissions from local bands. The idea for the column came from Andrea Heimer of No-Fi Soul Rebellion, and is one of the best ever presented to the magazine. Thanks Andrea!
