11 Questions: Aireekah Laudert
interview by Brent Cole
If you’re a fan of glitter and karaoke in Bellingham, then you probably know all about Aireekah Laudert – she’s the glitter queen of Bellingham, one of those great characters in town who makes it interesting and fun to live here. The fact she kills it at karaoke makes her just that much more awesome. But who is she, really? Welcome Aireekah as this month’s 11 questions guest.
Who are you and where did you come from? Please tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Aireekah of Aireeoke and Glitt3r Lyfe. I host karaoke and trivia, make fancy glitter tattoos and disgusting prosthetics, am really into costuming, create fancy jewelry, make delightful beverages, dig performance art, and, uh, like long walks on the beach with flocks of kittens. I was raised in the small and epically lovely town of Valdez, Alaska.
As a karaoke host, what’s the key to a good night of karaoke?
People having fun and being nice! Lots of claps and lots of laughs! People wearing dumb costumes! Also, the magic really comes out when people get super into it. Being a good singer doesn’t matter one bit, if you are having fun on stage the crowd feels it and has fun too.
Also, I love when I have a night where no one throws, drops or hits my microphones. They are such sensitive babies.
List the names you’ve had Siri call you.
It used to be Unicorn Princess, but now it’s Biscuit You’re A Biscuit.
Because it’s a beautiful and magical substance. Glitter is lush and colorful, sparkly and amazing. It makes anything look better and basically everybody loves it.
Also, I’m a big fan of practical jokes.
Some years ago I got really into consensual glitter bombing and it being the gift that keeps on giving. By glittering one willing participant, I was really glittering many people! Their friends! Their cats! Their banker! (And if you were ever a player in these early days of glitter bombing, you know it was a LOT of glitter…) I thought, “How many people/streets/states/etc. can I cover in sparkles?!” And thus, my evil beautiful plan of glittering the world began.
Through forces of what I can only describe as Unicorn Fate (and being a small-business nerd) I’ve been able to transform this joke into a fairly successful business model, and now I give people fancy glitter tattoos. And tiny bags of glitter to do my bidding. So that’s cool.
What do you do for your birthday?
Not much, really. Every year I (Muffy) get fake-married to my beautiful husband Dan Vee (Kitten Play). We have elaborate ceremonies, cover Bellingham in a ridiculous amount of glitt3r, sometimes I die, come back to life, travel to space through The Stargate, get stranded in space, come back to earth with new space friends and save the world from evil bounty hunters by activating The Funderdome 3100 and closing The Stargate. The Right Reverend Robert Lashley always officiates and is amazing. LEGALIZE FUN!
What initially brought you to Bellingham and why have you stayed here?
I used to hang out with a bunch of kayakers in Alaska that loved Bellingham and always spoke highly of it. I don’t even know how many people recommended that I move here. “At least check it out!” they’d say. “But you’ll probably fall in love and just move there.” Also, my older sister went to Western and she’s really cool, so I figured this place must be alright too.
So, I had a moment in my life where I just wanted to go somewhere and thought I’d stop here first. Maybe for a few months. Mayyybe six. But a year tops before my adventures brought me elsewhere. A decade later and I’m still here. This place is just so great! The best people, it’s gorgeous, a lovely arts and music community, rad shows, ample opportunities to do the things I enjoy… And I’m almost always a short walk away from the bay. Bellingham’s been good to me, I’m glad I stuck around.
Please describe your perfect Sunday morning.
My perfect Sunday morning includes friends, brunch, board or card games, and at least three different types of beverages in front of me at all times. And maybe taking a nap in the sun.
If you could have lunch with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be? Why?
It’s hard to choose just one person, but today I’m feeling Hibiscus from The Cockettes. I’m pretty sure it would be a lavish picnic with many snacks and mimosas. We could talk about the 70s hippie drag scene, body art, creating costumes, sing showtunes together, and if I was lucky I could touch their glitter beard. Hibiscus is one of my biggest fashion and performer icons. Such over-the-top beautiful drag magic.
If there is a parallel universe, what is that Aireekah doing?
Alt-Aireekah has a small (but world-renowned) restaurant specializing in soup, gravy, and delicious beverages. It delivers everywhere and is open really late. When she’s not giving people varieties of liquids to eat, she plays omnichord and synth in her space prog-rock band, Grand Wizards of Sex (The Planet), which got really big after a band lottery on The Awesome Show hosted by Michelle Schutte and Django Bohren. Also, Alt-Aireekah has a teacup pig named Puddles, which she got long before it was hip.
What’s your favorite flavor of snow cone?
What movie character is closest to your personality?
Unico from The Fantastic Adventures Of Unico. Unico is a little unicorn (who occasionally transforms into a beautiful adult unicorn) who has the gift of making all living creatures lighthearted and happy. Unico basically saves the world from an evil magician who turns people into living bricks to build his empire. How does she save the world? FRIENDSHIP. And LOVE. And somehow not judging the evil magician’s effed up face and terrifying cackle.
I’ve just always aspired to maybe be close-to-that-good in a situation like that.
Any last thoughts?
