This month’s picks: Don’t miss these shows!

Wynton Marsalis • Oct. 14 • Mount Baker Theatre

I’m a sucker for jazz, especially wildly talented musicians like Wynton Marsalis. Years ago when he played the Mount Baker, he actually ended down at a local jazz venue afterwards, jamming with locals (so the legends goes). Don’t miss his brilliance.

Intuitive Compass, Hot Damn Scandal • Oct. 15 • Green Frog

The first time I saw Intuitive Compass was at the Fairhaven Farmer’s Market of all places – this wonderfully gypsy-esque band entranced me. As their set was over I professed my love and asked if they were a new local band. Sadly, they don’t live here, but they’ll be swinging through town again this month, opening for Hot Damn Scandal, who are raising funds for an upcoming release. This is definitely a double bill you should see.

The Staxx Brothers, Arif & Jonezy • Oct. 22 • Wild Buffalo

While it’s always a good time when The Staxx Brothers play, openers Arif & Jonezy are can’t miss. Members of England’s King Porter Stomp, they’re in town to record a charity EP with locals at Northwest Sound Studios with proceeds going to charity projects. Check out pledgemusic.com/projects/kingporterstomp.

Ben Folds • Oct. 28 • Mount Baker Theatre

After all these years, Ben Folds continues to produce ridiculously engaging pop songs. For this special show, it’ll be just Ben and a piano – him tickling the keys, you listening intently to the magic. No other way to put it.

Squeltchfest • Oct. 28-29 • Bellingham Alt. Library

The Alternative Library will be moving into the Karate Church this month and this show will double as the grand opening. Croak, Candysound, Twin Sibling, Kuvoza, Babe Waves, Trophy Husband, Mhostly Ghostly, Rant, Woe, Chimney, Lalochezia and Mourn will all be playing. Dig it!

Iska Daaf • Nov. 3 • Make.Shift

This show was booked after all of this month’s stories were completed or I would’ve done a big ol’ feature on ID, which features Jase and Nikko from Vacationeer as part of the touring band. They play great nuggets and tour constantly, which means live they are ridiculously good.

And be sure to check out the featured artists this month, including Alestorm, Damien Jurado, Rivers to Roads, The Living Arrows, Portland Ryhthm Shakers, and others!
